The Dewey International School (DIS) is a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 international school that offers a modern American curriculum with a dynamic international education perspective. Our learning methodologies are based on the best practices of American and international pedagogy providing a broad and balanced education with the required specialization and experiences in later years.

The nursery and kindergarten at DIS provide a nurturing and caring environment allowing our young learners to develop their basic foundational skills, priming them for success in the elementary school and beyond. Our nursery and kindergarten teachers are specialists in early childhood education, and are fully trained and equipped to meet the developmental needs of each child. They provide an array of learning experiences to the young children by encouraging them to explore, discover and flourish. DIS young learners enjoy a spacious and well-equipped classroom ambience, and thrive in physical, academic, social, and emotional development.

The nursery section of the school caters to children between 2-4 years of age. The program places an emphasis on creative, social, emotional and physical development. To ensure that our nursery children enjoy the experience and wonder of learning, our teachers provide a continual opportunity for active exploration through guided and purposeful play. Activities are kept light-hearted and enjoyable for our budding new leaders of the future.

The Kindergarten 1 (K1) and Kindergarten 2 (K2) section is for children 5-6 years old. During the kindergarten years our children are provided with learning experiences that develop and increase their ability to communicate and cooperate with others effectively, while becoming more self-aware, responsible, and independent. It is during this time that students also develop phonic awareness and basic pre-reading skills. Children are also taught the foundations of mathematics and are given the opportunity to exercise their curiosity through interactive science activities. Students are challenged academically and learn through fun games, songs and active student-based experiences.

The Dewey International School’s elementary students enjoy well-equipped, comfortable classrooms offering a variety of high-tech and educational facilities. During the elementary years, students gain mastery of their basic skills in English, mathematics, science, social studies and technology.
Physical and social development also play an extremely important part in children’s education. DIS elementary students partake in drama, music, physical education, art and community-based activities. Our teachers are fully aware that all children have a preferred learning style, and reach their individual needs through a variety of teaching approaches and learning activities. Students are constantly exposed to numerous cooperative learning and student centered activities that exercise and develop their leadership skills. Elementary students also participate in educational field trips to various museums, research centers and science exhibitions

As students enter grade six they experience our middle school program. It is here where our students make the three-year transition to our challenging high school program. Students in middle school are introduced to a meticulous subject-based system, and learn directly from specialized teachers who teach their academic subjects. Homeroom teachers provide guidance and direction for the students throughout these transitional years.
Middle school students have the opportunity to participate in an overnight middle school field trip, which brings both campuses together in a bonding and learning situation. In middle school, students can further develop their leadership skills by participating in a wide variety of activities, including the student council. By accessing these opportunities, our emerging leaders of the future can start to have an impact on school development.

The Dewey International School’s 4-year rigorous high school program enables students to acquire the foundational skills and the basic requirements needed for graduation. Some of the academic courses offered at DIS include language arts, social studies, science (general science, biology, chemistry, and physics), math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and statistics), Cambodian History, Asian studies, world geography, economics, and psychology. Electives include American literature, Khmer literature, creative writing, journalism, foreign language (French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Khmer), computer science, music, art and drama.

Our curriculum is based on current learning research and is designed to help students to become informed citizens, self-motivated thinkers, and competent presenters of their knowledge and discoveries. Students are encouraged to read, write, research, conduct experiments, and create visual projects. The mentors for these programs are licensed professionals, specifically trained in their field of knowledge.

The four years of high school are crucial years for our students as they are expected to meet the challenges of a strong academic program that prepares them in applying for the most prestigious universities in the world. Again, many opportunities await the students. Leadership experiences, community service involvement, sports, the arts, and Advanced Placement (AP) programs continually challenge our students to successfully further their academic careers beyond high school.
